DAVE Newsham has set his sights on winning the independents title with new team Speedworks as he aims to keep the podium finishes coming during this year’s British Touring Car Championship.

The 2013 season begins at Brands Hatch on Sunday and Inverness driver Newsham will be looking to make an immediate impression.

It was at the Kent track last year the Newsham and former employers Team ES Racing achieved a third place finish — the first time he had been on the podium following his switch from racing in the Renault Clio Cup to the BTCC.

The 45-year-old went on to achieve a further five top three placings, including consecutive race wins, firstly at Snetterton and then Knockhill.

Such was the impact Newsham made that he was voted fans’ driver of the year as well, but there are no thoughts of resting on any laurels.

Having had a taste of success in 2012, Newsham plans to keep on moving forward and that means setting considerable targets for himself and the team.

"Our main aim for the season is to win the independents title, but it will not be easy by any means," he said.

"There is talk of this season being the most competitive ever, with full grids of up to 32 cars.

"I really want that independents title, but more wins would be nice too.

"We need to be aiming for podiums regularly, but not taking too many risks, as we need to finish races, scoring points on every possible occasion.

"Getting that first race win last year was very special. I’m not an emotional guy, but I was very close to tears.

"However, I have always had faith in my ability and knew that if the car was capable of winning, then we would win.

"These BTCC superstars have two arms and two legs the same as me, so why could I not beat them?

"After that first win, my mindset changed. Instead of being content with finishing in the top six, I was looking for podiums every time, and disappointed when we didn’t get them. That’s the mindset I need to have this season too."
