Inverness Craig Dunain will this weekend celebrate 10 years since the relaunch of their women’s team.

There had been a women’s side at the club beforehand, but they folded, and so the current iteration of the squad is now reaching double figures.

Craig Dunain have invited members of that first squad to their game against the Orkney Dragons at Canal Park on Saturday, where they will hope to continue their march towards the Women’s North League title.

Current club president Jess Butler was not there at the very beginning, joining around three years after the reformation, but she has still seen plenty of progress first hand since the early days.

“We’ve come a long way in that time,” she said.

“It’s a totally different world from bringing my daughter along and her asking me to join in.

“It has grown so much. We’re doing really well this season, but it’s about people giving their all on the day.

“If people make mistakes, that doesn’t matter for us. It’s about trying things, and we try and make it player-focused when we’re coaching.

“That’s the whole ethos of the club – rugby for everyone that wants to play. There were times only two or three people were at training.

“If they still wanted to play, we kept going, and that’s good as far as I’m concerned because it’s such an empowering game.”

Butler personally revels in seeing how much the club has changed over the last decade, but there are naturally still things she would like to see happen over the next 10 years.

“I get a real buzz out of seeing that growth,” she said.

“Lots of new people have come along over the last year, and it’s our ethos that keeps bringing them back.

“It’s about including new people in the club and helping each other to improve. That’s the way we try to play and what we try to do.

“I have a lot of ideas. I don’t want to look too far ahead, but it would be really good to get promoted after 10 years.”
