Head coach Dave Carson insists Highland Rugby Club will continue fighting to finish as high in National One as possible until the end of the season.

A frustrating defeat to second-bottom Watsonian last time out has left their promotions hopes hanging by a thread – one that could be cut with another setback at Melrose on Saturday.

Even if a promotion place becomes unattainable, though, Carson is adamant his players will not down tools in the final weeks of the season.

“If you’re talking about promotion, we have to win,” Carson stressed.

“It’s going to be tough. For our next two games we’re away at Melrose and Biggar, who are both in the top half of the league really fighting for promotion.

“Whatever happens, we’ll keep putting it on the players and they will go out every week to win.

“That’s regardless of whether we’re still fighting for promotion or whether we’re fighting for third or fourth, or whatever.

“It’s the way they are, they’re not going to go and chuck the season in just because they didn’t get the right result.”

Highland can take confidence going into tomorrow’s game from a win over Melrose at Canal Park.

“They played very similar to us, they had a good forward pack and a good scrimmage,” Carson recalled.

“We scrummed really well against them and got some good ball up the park.

“We scored some good tries, and then I think we held on towards the end as they came roaring back and won by a couple of points – I don’t think there was much in it.

“They’re very similar to us, they throw the ball wide, they’ve got some good backs and they like to run it, so it will be a right entertaining game. They all have been for the last three or four weeks. They’ve all gone right to the wire, so we can take confidence going down there.”

Highland will have to make do without Callum Carson, who tore a ligament in his knee at Myreside.
