HIGHLAND’S successful season is not quite over as they still have a few things to take care of before taking a well-earned break.

Next weekend, the senior side travel to play Aberdeen Wanderers in their final Caledonia League Division Two North fixture, but before then it is the club’s annual seven-a-side tournament at Canal Park tomorrow.

The event is normally very popular, but with so many clubs still playing rescheduled fixtures, the number of entrants is much reduced.

However with eight squads entered and playing off in two round-robin leagues, there will still be plenty of entertaining rugby for the spectators.

In the first pool will be Highland, Mackie Bears, Ross Sutherland and Young Team, while the second section is made up of Black Watch, Inverness Craig Dunain, Lochaber and We Used To Be Good.

The winners of each pool qualify for the Lauder Cup final, the runners-ups go into the Highland Shield and the third placed sides will contest the Ian Milne Memorial Bowl.

Last year’s tournament champions We Used To Be Good return to defend the Lauder Cup. The make up of this Highland under-18 squad of 11 years ago means they are likely to once again be very difficult to beat.

Although a lot of that squad contains many of Highland’s senior players, the city club will field a very good team of their own. Both, however, are likely to be wary of the threat posed by visiting side’s, the Mackie Bears and Black Watch.

The day starts around noon with all of the teams registering and then warming up. The first games kick-off at 1pm with the cup finals being played around 5pm.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Highland’s under-15s travel for a friendly match against Howe of Fife, while the mini section are making the trip to Ross Sutherland for a rugby festival at the Naval Ground.
