Highland Rugby Club will return to Canal Park for the first time in three weeks tomorrow as they face Stewart’s Melville.

Last weekend’s fixture list was practically wiped out due to the freezing conditions, with the first team’s match against Kelso and the Raptors’ derby against Ross Sutherland each falling by the wayside.

Dave Carson’s first 15 had been on the road the week before that, losing out 16–7 at Biggar.

It may, then, feel overdue when they return to action in Inverness against Stewart’s Melville this weekend.

Stewart’s Melville have generally struggled in National One so far this season, sitting bottom of the table with one win from their 14 matches to date.

Highland, meanwhile, are part of a tight-knit group behind the leading pack who are constantly jostling for position in a bid to finish as high in the table as possible.

Five points – potentially just one victory – separate Gala, Highland and Biggar, so Carson will be looking for his side to take full advantage tomorrow to strengthen Highland’s cause for the rest of the campaign.

Their second team, meanwhile, have gone from preparing to battle rivals Ross Sutherland to hoping their neighbours can do them a favour in the Caledonia North Two title race.

The Raptors travel to Gordonians 2nds as favourites against a side who have had a mixed campaign to date.

Title rivals Moray, who still hold their fate in their own hands, are due to be on the road themselves as they visit Invergordon.

If the Raptors can pair a win of their own with a Stags triumph, control of the crown swings back to Highland, so it could prove to be a pivotal weekend.

One team’s season has come to an early end, though, as Inverness Craig Dunain’s women saw an early call-off against Peterhead cap off their Women’s North League campaign.

Peterhead have pulled out of the division leaving results against them to be expunged, meaning Craig Dunain currently sit at the top of the table. However, Shetland are two points behind with two games to play, so an ICD title remains unlikely.
