HIGHLAND raised their game on Saturday to get a 30-12 bonus point win over Mackie Academy FP, but it was a contest not without a few problems along the way.

Director of rugby Hugh Mackintosh was forced to make a couple of changes to his squad following the late call-offs of two players — Epi Vukicea came onto the bench, while Gareth High started in the second row.

Despite the reshuffle, the Greens started well and for most of the first half they dominated the visitors, cruising into a 23-0 lead, although the concern before the break was the growing penalty count against Highland.

Mackie Academy, however, could not take advantage and the score remained the same at the interval.

But Highland clearly had not learned from their mistakes and as they continued to fall foul of the referee, the visitors put 12 points on the scoreboard. This seemed to spark the Greens into life again and a converted try eventually sealed the victory that brought with it a welcome bonus point.

Highland’s try scorers were High, David Ramsay, Kieran Watson and Tam Magowan, while Craig Irvine and Ruaridh MacDonald shared two penalties and two conversions between them.
