Highland will hope to celebrate success against Stornoway this weekend

THE season is gradually coming to its end and Highland play their last home league match of the season as they take on Stornoway at Canal Park this Saturday.

The visitors will make the trip with some trepidation knowing that their island cousins Shetland suffered a 129-0 defeat last Saturday.

Highland, on the other hand, have other concerns. With the Bowl Final next weekend against St Boswells, Highland will want to play a strong, structured game as well as securing another win towards the target of finishing the league unbeaten as champions.

After several players being rested last weekend the coaching staff will want to ensure those first choice players have a run out as well as trying to include those fringe players having caught the eye. Yet whatever the make-up of the squad it is going to be too strong for the islanders and they may well spend the entire game in damage limitation. Stornoway can muster a handy pack and if they are on their game this will be just the competition the home side needs.

To help the islanders’ travel arrangements the match will have an early kick-off of 12.30pm and all club members and supporters are asked to take note.

The Highland P4/5 and P6/7 Mini squads continued their winning ways at the Kinloss Festival last Sunday.

The P6/P7 again won through the group stages undefeated before meeting Caithness in the final in a repeat of the Moray tournament. Highland took an early two try lead before a well worked Caithness move brought them back into the match but a late try gave Highland a 3-1 win.

Due to an unusual scoring system the P4/5 Reds only qualified from the group stages in second place, despite winning all their matches. This led to a tough semi-final against pool winners Huntly who fielded a large team.

After some tough defending the winning try came from Ben Sharp who finished in the corner after an excellent piece of play. The ball was moved through all of the players’ hands in a move that started close to their own try line. The Reds won the final 5-2 against Caithness.

The Highland Greens won their first two group matches well, but were out muscled by the large Nairn and Huntly teams in the other matches.
