HIGHLAND’s fixtures took a big knock at the weekend as two important matches were postponed because of the weather.

The 1st XV game was called off when the weather disrupted the island ferry schedules and Orkney were unable to travel.

This was a setback for both clubs as they wanted to get the fixture played to avoid a growing backlog of matches.

It was especially frustrating for head coach Dave Carson as a strong squad was available and hoping to secure a valuable four points.

The second match postponed was the under-18s’ last league match of the season against Boroughmuir after the Edinburgh club cancelled their trip, with fears about travelling in the poor weather conditions being the cause.

Coach John Carson’s squad was ready to round off the league campaign with a win and top the table.

At a time when other squads were missing out on games, it was good news that the 2nd XV at last saw a fixture being played with the visit of Mackie Academy 2nd XV.

In a one-sided encounter Highland ran in 12 tries in a 64-0 victory. Rory Cross made his return after injury and scored two tries, while there were also debuts for under-18 players David Marnock and Fionnlagh Call, the latter running in two tries.

Also making club debuts were new arrivals Iain Lednor at number six and Jamie Innes at 10.

This was a very entertaining encounter considering the conditions and was played in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The game gets the 2nd XV up and running in 2015 and hopefully they will now see more matches played.

Sunday’s Mini and Micro sections had their Sunday training sessions cancelled due to the weather.
