HIGHLAND play their last training fixture before the start of the league campaign in another testing encounter against Perthshire.

The hosts are one league higher in BT National League Three and just the pre-season challenge Dave Carson wants for his players.

The development of this season’s squad has been going well at training and the players performing well in two tough matches against superior opposition.

On Saturday there will be some changes as summer holidays are still in play and this means David Titterington and Rory Cross will be absent from the midfield. Carson is keen to give Iain Crush and Jack Sutherland starts to see how they fare on the move from under-18 side to senior level.

Also missing will be prop Stuart Watson who is being rested to give his ankle problem a better chance of clearing up. Another former under-18, Murdo Paterson, will deputise even though he is leaving for university soon. Scrum-half Tom Brogan also gets a rest due to a rib injury and another departing student, Fionnlagh Call, will likely fill in.

Preparations are going well for the Canal Park side and another good match performance, win or lose, will be enough to keep Highland on track for a good season and the target of promotion.

Highland’s second string also make the trip with the 1st XV to play Perthshire in a friendly amtch and they have a lot of work to do to match the level of last season.

Holidays have slowed down the preparations and a complete squad has yet to materialise. Last weekend they found it hard going against Aberdeen Grammar, and against Ellon they were outclassed.
