Highland Boxers are aiming for medal haul at national championship

HIGHLAND Boxing Academy athletes will be looking to become national champions this weekend as the finals of the Boxing Scotland National Development Championships take place.

Andrew Mclaughlan beat Coll McMillan from Kincorth on a split decision to reach the final on Sunday.

Joe Kinsella beat Connor Jolly from Bravehearts on a split decision to reach the final on Saturday.

Brodie Zineldin beat Jamie Bingham from Irvine Elite Boxing Club by unanimous decision to reach the final on Sunday.

Liam Miller beat Daniel Juma-Phiri of Midlothian Boxing Club by unanimous decision as he is set to fight at the quarter final stage tonight.

Joshua Morrison beat Caius De’Araujo of Lochend Boxing club by unanimous decision.

He is set to fight at the semi final stage tonight.

Jason Pierce is set to fight in the 37kg semi final tomorrow.

Catrin King and Jenna Gallagher are also set to compete in the women’s section tomorrow.

HBA head coach Liam Foy has high hopes for his fighters’ prospects, and is confident that they can bring a significant medal haul back home to Inverness this weekend.

“We are looking forward to the weekend ahead and are aiming to bring back a big medal haul,” he said.

“Some of our boxers will be competing straight into finals this weekend. Others will be competing in the quarter final and semi final stage, aiming to reach the finals which will be taking place this weekend too.

“Some of our fighters are competing in large divisions and have done really well so far. We are quite confident of success this weekend.

“Our club record is bringing back five gold medals from the championships.

“It would be fantastic if all of the boxers can come back as champions.

“They are all more than capable, but they all need to produce their best on the day.”
