Head coach Dave Carson believes contenders are starting to emerge at the top of the National One table – making Highland’s match against Gala at Canal Park tomorrow all the more important.

Six games into the season, a gap could open up between the top five and the rest of the table depending on how other results go.

Highland are in that leading group, as are Gala, who until last weekend were unbeaten at the top of the table.

“Ayr are up in third and doing well, but they’ve had four home games and only two on the road – one of those was against us and they got beat,” Carson said.

“Ayr will be there or thereabouts, so will ourselves, Melrose are just quietly getting their wins.

“At the bottom end there are a few teams who are starting to get cut adrift like Aberdeen Grammar.

“Things are starting to open up, but we’ll just keep pushing towards the top and hopefully that will start this weekend against Gala.

“It’s going to be another massive week with another massive game at the end of it at home against a quality side. Gala missed out on promotion by a point on the last day of the season, so you couldn’t get a bigger game for us this weekend.”

Every match feels significant in National One, but with home advantage this weekend Carson is confident in his squad’s ability to get the desired result.

“We do go on a rollercoaster sometimes when we’re not switched on enough, but after the GHK game where we really didn’t turn up we followed it up with a great bonus-point win against Biggar,” he explained.

“We’ve got a bit of momentum going which is good, two wins and one close defeat, and we’re back at home again with a good crowd at Canal Park.

“The boys will be looking forward to it, they all love playing at Canal Park.

“It’s a special place now with the balcony and the crowds we’re getting down, it’s a great atmosphere. It certainly gees the guys on.”
