HEAD coach Billy Dodds believes the end of the season is a rare case of the league table not telling the true position of where teams are in the Championship.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle finished the campaign in sixth place with 55 points and missed out on the play-offs after their 2-1 defeat to Ayr United on Friday night.

They were eight points behind champions Dundee, with Ayr United in second on 58, ahead of Queen’s Park on goal difference and Partick Thistle claiming fourth and the final play-off spot on 57.

Dodds believes Inverness are a better team than their final position suggests, saying the injury crisis halfway through the campaign was a massive disadvantage in their push for promotion.

“People always say the league table never lies but I think this time it does,” said Dodds.

“If we didn’t have that injury list, I have never seen injuries like that.

“People say I shouldn’t have that as an excuse, but sometimes you should - the boys have worked ever so hard.

“The fringe players have also worked hard and kept us there or thereabouts.

“If I had my full quota of players there is no danger we’re finishing sixth.”
