CONGRATULATIONS to Ross County, who wake up this morning (Monday) as the Scottish League Cup winners.

Backed by 8,000 supporters inside Hampden Park in Glasgow yesterday, Jim McIntyre's men clinched a thrilling final 2-1 against Hibernian, with Dutchman Alex Schalk hitting the last-gasp winner to win the trophy for the Dingwall club for the first time.

This tremendous trophy triumph means both national knock-out trophies are based in the Highlands, with Caley Thistle currently holders of the Scottish Cup.

Although sitting fourth in the Premiership, County, as expected, had to battle all the way to see off Championship opponents Hibs, who are hotly tipped to contest the promotion play-off to join Rangers back in the top-flight next season.

Fans' favourite Michael Gardyne shot County in front after 26 minutes when he latched on to a pass from man-of-the-match Jackson Irvine to round keeper Mark Oxley and bury the ball into the net.

Hibs, who had the support of 30,000 fans inside the stadium, roared back and deservedly drew level on the stroke of half-time thanks to a wonderful strike from Liam Fontaine.

Hibs began to get a grip of the game in the second half, but the introduction of forward Brian Graham really rattled the men from Leith.

He had the ball in the net twice, once ruled offside then, according to referee Kevin Clancy, for fouling Oxley as he rose to score.

County didn't let this rock them though and continued to believe they would win.

The dramatic cup-winning moment arrived in the final minute of the 90 when the excellent Gardyne somehow found enough energy to get to the byline, whip in a cross and Schalk darted in to score after Fonatine was unable to block the delivery.

A facial knock to Staggies skipper Andrew Davies added to the four minutes of stoppage time before the whistle blew and history was made.

The Ross County cup final team was: Gary Woods, Marcus Fraser, Michael Gardyne, Ian McShane (Stewart Murdoch 79), Liam Boyce (Brian Graham 59), Richard Foster (Jonathan Franks 85), Andrew Davies (captain), Alex Schalk, Martin Woods, Jackson Irvine, Paul Quinn. Subs not used: Christopher Konopka (GK), Scott Boyd, Chris Robertson, Raffaele De Vita.

Attendance: 38,796.

Referee: Kevin Clancy.
