The North Cross Country League holds its fifth and penultimate meeting of the season at Nairn tomorrow, with Inverness Harriers’ defence of the men’s team title now hanging by a thread.

An incomplete team at the previous event at Peterhead converted a healthy Inverness lead to a four-point deficit behind Moray Road Runners, with only tomorrow’s meeting and the final event later in the month remaining.

The Road Runners also have their top athlete Kenny Wilson back from injury. Meanwhile, a shin problem is expected to keep leading Inverness contender John Newsom out for the second time in a row, which also puts his individual title bid under threat.

Michael O’Donnell, Donnie MacDonald and Graham Bee do look likely to run but Stuart Gardiner, the top Inverness finisher in Peterhead, is unavailable. However Scottish inter district champion Sean Chalmers, could transform things for Inverness.

With a lead of 64 points, Inverness women’s lead looks unassailable as they look to be cruising towards the title.

The only way they could avoid winning the title is if they were incomplete for both remaining races in the competition.

In addition, Caroline Marwick, who already has two second places, looks unlikely to complete her switch of club to Highland Hill Runners before the end of the series.

Catriona Fraser is in pole position in the individual standings with team-mates Marwick, Emily Andrew and Gemma Cormack almost the only rivals with a chance of catching her.

Three junior individual titles are already decided, two of them in favour of Inverness Harriers who could add two more tomorrow.

The Scottish multi events and veteran indoor championships take place at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena with a small presence from Inverness expected to be competing at the event.
