Danny Williams, in action for Caley Thistle against Dundee United's Ryan Gow last season, is confident the Inverness side can again be challenging for European competition.

DANNY Williams says Caley Thistle are enjoying getting into shape for the new season – because the passing game is bring the best out in them.

The 26-year-old wide man played his part in their latest victory, a 1-0 weekend win at Championship hosts Raith Rovers at Kirkcaldy.

The Wigan-born midfielder explained that taking on board manager John Hughes ideas is going down well within the squad.

He said: "Saturday was another good work-out for us. We have been playing well lately. It’s all about putting the gaffer’s strategies into place. What we’ve been doing in training is all falling into place so far in the matches.

"We have been doing a lot of work on our passing and creating space and transfer that into games. When we played Raith Rovers last year it was more of a battle, but we must have controlled about 80 per cent of possession on Saturday. We are keeping the ball really well and that’s more enjoyable for us.

"It’s also all about getting game time and improving our fitness at this time of the year."

The former Kendal Town player, who made 24 appearances for ICT last term, believes there’s no reason why the side cannot clinch a trophy or a Europa League berth after finishing fifth in May.

He stressed: "We want to improve on what we achieved last year.

"It would be nice to reach another cup final and possibly win it, but the chance to push for the top four and push for European football would be unbelievable."
