Gus Dey says the main motivation at Nairn County is to maintain their unbeaten run after avoiding defeat in their last seven matches.
Nairn County head to Deveronvale tomorrow afternoon looking to break into the top half of the Highland League and continue their resurgence after a disastrous start to the campaign, failing to win their first 12 matches in all competitions.
But Nairn have gone seven matches unbeaten in all competitions and have not lost since a 4–0 defeat to Brora Rangers on October 15.
Dey (28) says Nairn have a new-found belief under manager Steven Mackay and says there is a real determination to keep their unbeaten run going.
The centre midfielder said: “We have really picked up the last seven games, believing we could win every one.
“There is a feeling in the dressing room we can keep it going.
“The form we are on we have no reason to fear anyone.
“Deveronvale will be tough and stuffy and they got a point against us earlier this season.
“But the run we are on, we feel we can go into every game with expectation we can win it. Then we have a double header with Clach.
“The belief and the character in the squad is there. Even if we go a goal down we don’t feel we have lost the game, the new-found belief is definitely there.
“There is no reason we can’t get nine points in the next three games.”
Dey, a physical education teacher at Grantown Grammar School, has attributed part of Nairn’s success to the manager’s emphasis on fitness.
He says it has made a difference to being competitive for the full 90 minutes.
“You speak to anyone at the club, they will say the same thing, he puts a lot of work into the fitness side of things and competing for 90 minutes.
“That showed against Forres, we were 3–1 down with 15 minutes to go and we came back and won. Fitness is a big thing and the general belief in the team now is we go into every game and never feel defeated or out of a match.”
Dey, who is now in his fifth season at Nairn, feels he is in the best form of his life.
He said: “During my time at Nairn, I have been in and out, but this season I have started almost every league game. I am playing the best football I have played since being here.”
