HIGHLAND left it late before finally seeing off a spirited Glenrothes side 28-25 away from home to keep themselves in among the leading pack in Caledonia Regional League Division One.

Despite facing such adversity, the visitors rallied and Gareth High went over for a try that earned him a bloody nose in the process after being tackled late — a decision that saw a Glenrothes player sin-binned.

MacDonald returned for Highland but soon departed again with a nasty cut to his eye, while a cut forehead and twisted ankle forced off Euan Watson and Kenny Cameron respectively.

Glenrothes, who had finished the first half strongly, maintained this impetus after the break, their cause aided by Jamie MacDonald being sin-binned for Highland after he retaliated to being pulled back when trying to chase his own kick. John Wallace was then sent-off for stamping as it went from bad to worse for the Greens, who conceded two tries, one of which was converted to give Glenrothes a 25-13 lead.

Two unconverted tries and a penalty by the hosts were only answered by a penalty from Highland as both sides went in at the interval level on 13-13.

Two early tries from Andy Hill had the Greens cruising early on, but lapses in concentration, allied to falling foul of the referee on too many occasions, allowed Glenrothes back into this contest.

An unconverted try from captain Ross Thompson restored parity for a resilient Highland, who went on to win the game courtesy of a late penalty that gave them an unlikely victory given the circumstances.
