Head coach Dave Carson believes good habits are the way Highland Rugby Club will become genuine title contenders.

Carson has spoken of the need to improve their away form, but even in last weekend’s comprehensive home victory over Aberdeen Grammar he felt there was room for improvement.

Once again his side come up against a team below them in the National One table tomorrow as they visit Dundee, and this time around he wants Highland’s players to ensure there is no chance of a slip up.

“If you get used to playing the right way all the time, it becomes second-nature, so it doesn’t matter who you’re playing – you still have to put in a good performance,” he stressed.

“Then the result usually takes care of itself. You’ve really got to be focused on that every week.

“That’s what we’re really striving for over the rest of the season.

“We’re right behind Gala now, so we’re looking to overtake them. The other ones might be too far ahead, but you never know. At this time of the year games will be getting postponed, and you never know who’s going to slip up.

“I still want to push as high as we can.

“Gala is the next aim, to see if we can overtake them, get into fourth and then see what we can do from there.”

Dundee will be no pushovers on their home turf tomorrow, despite Highland winning a back-and-forth contest at Canal Park earlier in the season.

“It will be really tough,” Carson insisted.

“We beat them at home, but there wasn’t much in it.

“Last year we beat them home and away, but down there it was a really tough, physical game. They’re sitting in mid-table at the moment, they’ve won a few and lost a few as well, so it will be a tough game down there.

“I said I wanted nine points going into the break, and we got the first five last week, so if we can get another four at Dundee that will be a nice way to finish 2022.”
