Cameron Mackay says it’s his ambition to become the established number one goalkeeper at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and is determined to take his chance.

The 25-year-old, who has regularly had to settle for a place on the bench during his time at the club, was given a chance in the first team in the 1-1 draw against Arbroath on Saturday.

Regular first choice goalkeeper Mark Ridgers, who was substituted at half-time in the 4-0 defeat at Greenock Morton eight days previously, was dropped to the bench at the Caledonian Stadium last weekend.

Mackay admitted it is not easy being a substitute goalkeeper and he is determined to prove his worth to head coach Billy Dodds when put in between the sticks.

“It is difficult sitting on the bench week in, week out as people get this opinion of you as just a number two, that is definitely not the case,” he said.

“The gaffer has told me that the chance will come along and I have to take it.

“I want to be the number one and push Mark as far as I can possibly push him, when the chance comes along I have to take it.

“It would be easy with the experience Mark has to
keep him in the team, but maybe he sees something different.

“He is prepared to give me the chance which I am grateful for and hopefully I can repay him for that.”

Nathan Shaw gave Caley Thistle the lead seven minutes into the second half.
But Kieran Shanks levelled on the hour mark for Arbroath as Inverness were left to regret not taking their chances.

Mackay knows it was a big opportunity to end their winless run which has now stretched to four matches.

“I thought that we kept the ball well and moved them all over the place and created some good chances,” says Mackay.

“We had around 14 shots and nine on target and to walk away with a point is disappointing.

“It is a good reaction from the past few weeks that we dominated the game, just not enough to win.”
