Mark Ridgers says finishing at least eighth is the priority for Inverness Caledonian Thistle now after suffering defeat to Ayr which has kept them in the Championship relegation play-off zone.

With only two wins at home all season in the league, Inverness are in ninth place in the Championship and two points from safety with seven games remaining of the regular season.

Out of their seven wins in the league this season, five have been away from home.

Inverness are now nine points off the promotion play-offs, but goalkeeper Ridgers says Inverness should not be considering them as a possibility.

After another poor home defeat, he says the focus is now ensuring they don’t finish in the bottom two.

He said: “We try to be positive by looking at the table, but now it is all about finishing outside the bottom two.

“Results like that, when you are losing to teams who are around about you, losing to Queen’s Park, losing to Arbroath, now losing to Ayr, it has shot us in the foot and we have big games coming up.

“Realistically you can be positive and look to get out of the play-offs. You don’t want to finish in the ninth position as there will be four really hard games below us.

“The play-offs with League One are different to the play-offs when you are trying to get promoted.

“We need to be aware of that, we had been picking up points but realistically we need to win games and pick up as many points as we can until the end of the season.

“Every point is massive with the table the way it is in. We are not where we want to be and we have let ourselves down at home.“

Speaking about their better form away than at home, Ridgers said: “It is hard to know what to put it down to.

“Are teams more open when they are home against us and that suits us? You learn quickly, the manager has a style and we are trying that to a point.

“But when it is not working for us, we have to switch it up a bit. “

Inverness head to face league leaders Dundee United at Tannadice on Saturday and Ridgers says it is a must win game for them.

“We have to try and win the game and win the games from now until the end of the season to ensure we don’t finish in ninth position.”
