JAKE Davidson insists Caley Thistle’s under-fire defence won’t use youth as an excuse after costly early season errors.

The summer signing from Queens Park was part of a four-man rearguard with an average age of 22 in Saturday’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to his old employers.

Slotting in at right-back alongside Wallace Duffy, Zak Delaney and Cammy Harper, Davidson looks like being a valuable asset in Billy Dodds’ squad and is confident the defence and team as a whole will improve.

“We have players bedding in and we’re a young back four as well,” the 22-year-old former Dundee United, Waterford and Arbroath defender said.

“It’s no excuse for what’s been happening – we have to just learn from it – and hopefully we can cut out these mistakes soon.

“We left ourselves too much to do by gifting Queen’s Park a goal and conceding another early in the second half.

“It’s disappointing, especially at home, to lose the first game of the season. We wanted to get those points on the board.

“First and foremost, the performance wasn’t good enough and we need to start changing it soon.

“I’m confident we have enough quality in the squad and we still have players like Sean Welsh, Adam Brooks and Danny Devine to come back in.

Davidson hammered in a header for his first Inverness goal late in the game, but it was a case of mixed feelings in the circumstances.

“Personally, it was good to get on the scoresheet, but you’d rather do it in different circumstances,” he stressed.

“I’m settling in well here and I’m loving the city. It’s quite quiet, but I’m a quiet boy, so it suits me.

“The family enjoys coming up to see me as well, so it’s been nice.

“The Championship is such a tight league, but we have quality here. We’ll go down to Ayr looking to win.”
