Meanwhile, in the shinty/hurling match at Bught Park featuring teams from the armed forces of Britain and Ireland, it was the Irish who were celebrating after a 24-4 victory.

The Strathpeffer side battled back to parity with a double from Kevin Bartlett after Zander Ferguson and Scott Paterson had given the visitors an early lead, but the Cabers had no answer as Lochaber pulled away strongly in the final 30 minutes with Ben Delaney scoring a treble.

Caberfeidh’s title ambitions in the Marine Harvest North Division One were dented as they crashed to a 5-2 home defeat to Lochaber.

A Ronald Ross hat-trick for Kingussie at Inveraray moved the Badenoch side into to the top half of the table for the first time this season.

Kyles Athletic also moved closer to the top after a 2-0 victory at the expense of Kilmallie with strikes from Ewan Campbell and Rupert Williamson securing the points.

Kinlochshiel stay second following a 4-2 home win over Bute. Doubles from Neil Fraser and Duncan MacRae sealed a victory that moves the Kirkton side to within a point of leaders Newtonmore.

Lovat dug in for victory after that and goals from Martin Bell and Fraser Gallagher completed a famous victory.

Greg Matheson started the comeback with a strike in the 29th minute and he drew the Balgate side level with a penalty conversion five minutes after the break.

The Kiltarlity side showed their fighting qualities as they battled back from two down after goals from Bryan Simpson and Gary Innes had put the Fort in the driving seat.

Lovat consolidated third place in the Orion Group Premiership after a shock 4 - 2 away win over Fort William.

The Camanachd Association will hold an enquiry before ordering a replay. The match was level at 4 - 4 in extra-time when Ferguson called a halt.

The Kilmallie versus Ballachulish match was abandoned by referee Neil Ferguson after a fracas involving both sets of players and supporters.

Beauly and Newtonmore also won through when their scheduled opponents Aberdour and Taynuilt both scratched after encountering team-raising difficulties.

In the Sutherland Cup, Boleskine, seen as an outside bet for the trophy, were surprisingly beaten by Caberfeidh reserves, who recorded a fine 3-2 win at Farr. They are joined in the quarter-finals by Glenurquhart, Lovat, Kingussie and Fort William.

Skye’s win came courtesy of late goals from Danny Morrison and Ally MacDonald, while Lochcarron’s Ross Matheson was red carded by referee Graham Irving. Skye are at home to Glasgow Mid Argyll in the quarter-finals.

Skye are also through after a 2 - 0 triumph in the West Highland derby clash with Lochcarron.

Camanachd will now face Lochaber for a place in the last four of the competition.

Rippon struck again three minutes before half-time and MacCuish was also on target again in the final minute. An own goal from Oban’s Daniel Cameron in the 70th minute was a mere consolation for Strathglass.

It may have been the effects of the long journey south, but the Strath failed to resist Camanachd’s powerful opening blitz and with barely 30 minutes on the clock they trailed by four goals with a double from Aiden MacIntyre adding to strikes by Andrew MacCuish and Matt Rippon.

Strathglass were also on the wrong side of a 6-1 defeat as they crashed out of the Balliemore Cup at the hands of Oban Camanachd.

Reid went onto complete his hat-trick, despite failing to convert a penalty. Iain Broadhead capped a disappointing day for the Green and Whites with an own goal in the 72nd minute.

The goal appeared to drain Beauly’s resolve and in the second half the Glenurquhart forward line hit top form as they cut through a hesitant home defence.

Ten minutes later, Neale Reid finished off a scintillating Glen move as he converted from the edge of the box.

Beauly’s fightback was short-lived, however, and four minutes later MacLennan struck again after the Glen had played the ball forward from a free hit in their own half.

The hosts continued to enjoy plenty of possession and in the 19th minute Marc MacLachlan hit a deserved equaliser.

Beauly were first to strike, but Martin Davidson’s effort in the 10th minute was ruled offside. Almost immediately, the Glen worked the ball through the Beauly rearguard and Lewis Maclennan applied the finish.

Both teams were short of their strongest line-up with Beauly missing the influential trio of Innes Simpson, David Neilson and Jamie MacLennan, while for Glenurquhart Drew MacLennan was unavailable and Arran MacDonald started on the bench as he strives to regain fitness.

It was a victory for the Glen that earns them a last four clash at home to Newtonmore on Saturday 19th May.
