The pre-season friendly between the Glasgow Warriors and Worcester Warriors in Inverness has been cancelled.

Worcester have been hit with plenty of uncertainty over the last week with reports that the club would be placed into administration imminently.

Their main sponsors had agreed to cover the costs of the trip up to the Highland capital, but director of rugby Steve Diamond confirmed they would not be travelling north on social media.

Glasgow Warriors have already travelled north for the match, which was due to be part of Highland Rugby Club's centenary celebrations.

It would have marked the first time since 2000 that a professional rugby match took place in Inverness, and Glasgow and Scotland international prop Zander Fagerson visited the Caledonian Stadium last week, but the match will not longer be going ahead.

A statement from Glasgow Warriors read: "Friday night’s opening pre-season match against Worcester Warriors in Inverness has been cancelled.

"Due to their ongoing financial issues meaning wages remain unpaid, the players and staff at Sixways have taken the decision not to travel to Inverness to fulfil the fixture.

"Our playing squad have already made the trip north, and our community activations will continue, including tomorrow’s Open Training Session at Highland RFC.

"We are currently assessing if any alternative options are achievable and will be in touch with more information as soon as possible.

"Although we are disappointed by this outcome, we recognise the challenging situation Worcester currently find themselves in and wish them well.

"We thank you for your patience in the meantime."
