GARY Cornish marked his return to the ring with a points victory over journeyman Pole Kamil Sokolowski.

Making his debut for new management team MTK Scotland, Cornish eventually saw off Sokolowski’s challenge with a 59-55 points victory.

The win is likely to mean another outing for Cornish in Glasgow on March 24, to give him better preparation for the British heavyweight title fight against Sam Sexton in June.

It was a last-minute change of opponent for the Highlander, with Georgian Revaz Karelishvili pulling out of the fight late this week.

That meant Sokolowski, who he beat on points last year, was a late draft-in and it took the full six rounds for the Merkinch heavyweight to come out on top.

A composed first round had Cornish on top, sending his opponent back-pedalling with some strong left-hand jabs.

Sokolowski started holding in the second round and Inverness-born Cornish looked comfortable, without landing too many big shots.

The third was scrappy, with Sokolowski trying to be the aggressor, although Cornish looked a lot better on the front foot rather than trying to counter-punch.

He looked light on his feet throughout, owing to the near-two-stone in weight he has lost since training under Billy Nelson, but Plymouth-based Sokolowski was not going away.

He hung about through into round five, with Cornish attempting to send him packing with a strong right hook. But any time the fight started to develop a bit of fluidity, Sokolowski held on, having already been warned for hitting Cornish on the back of the head.

By round six Sokolowski had started to flag and, without hitting top gear, Cornish was a comfortable victor.
