ALLOA Athletic, who knocked holders Ross County out of the Betfred Cup, lie in wait for Caley Thistle next week.

The League One outfit have been the main shock troops in this revamped version of the League Cup, winning their group with a 100 per cent record, including that stirring 3-2 success against Ross County last Tuesday.

County’s 7-0 rout against Highland League champions Cove Rangers came too late to keep them in the competition, but Caley Thistle’s win by the same scoreline against League Two visitors Arbroath won them their section.

Dundee United, the only team who could have stopped them, qualified as runners-up following their 2-0 win on Sunday at home to Dunfermline Athletic in their all-Championship contest.

Inverness CT manager Richie Foran is unlikely to treat Alloa with anything other than respect, yet at the same time will be confident that his ever-improving players can book their spot in the quarter-finals.

Other notable second round ties include League One Peterhead being drawn away to Rangers, Celtic hosting Motherwell, Ayr United, now back in the Championship, welcoming Aberdeen and St Johnstone facing Hearts.

The other games are: Dundee United v Partick Thistle, Hibernian v Queen of the South and Hamilton v Morton.

These fixtures will be played over next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (August 9, 10 and 11).
