MATCHING each other’s birdie golf over Elgin’s Hardhillock course, Bryan Fotheringham, of Inverness, and Moray’s Kevin Thomson, both previous individual winners this season, tied the leading score of one over par 70 in the latest North Scottish Golfers’ Alliance fixture.

Their cards were almost identical, both covering the outward half in 37 strokes and then each reeling off three successive birdies on the inward 11th, 12th and 13th holes for 33s.

With two holes to play, Thomson held a two stroke advantage, but while he completed his card par, bogey, Fotheringham closed off birdie, par.

Meanwhile, Grantown-on-Spey’s Gavin Hay has enjoyed his first win on the US University college tour.

Hay, a 21-year-old fourth year student at Carson-Newman University, Tennessee, and winner of the Grantown-on-Spey four day tournament last summer, triumphed the Tusculum Invitational at Links Hills Country Club with rounds of 67 and 70.

Hay is considering his future and remains undecided whether after college to stay on in America and take the same path as Inverness golfer Russell Knox, or return to play in the Euro-Pro tour.
