Fotheringham claims top ten finish

As the competition at Nairn Dunbar was about to start, the Scottish Seniors north tour event at Elgin was coming to a close with Gordon MacDonald (Callander) closing the gap to just 30 points at the top of the order of merit after a two shot win over Nairn’s Robert Smith. MacDonald had rounds of 68 and 70 against Smith’s 68 and 72.

Neil MacWilliam (Elgin) 81/75; Chris Gaittens (Fortrose) 83/73; Allan Cameron (Inverness) 76/81; Ross Proctor (Forres) 81/76; Sean Burgess (Nairn) 78/81; Lyle McAlpine (Royal Dornoch) 75/85; Kevin Matheson (Royal Dornoch) 79/82; Ray Stewart (Nairn Dunbar) 85/75; Lewis Reid (Fortrose) 79/83; Jamie Treasurer (Inverness) 82/82; Dan Holden (Royal Dornoch) 91/80.

North players who missed the cut were:

Kevin Thomson (Moray) 298; Ewan Forbes (Inverness) 299; Rodger Clarke (Moray) 300; Ross Jack (Alness) 301; Mark Ross (Elgin) 306; Freddie Brown (Nairn Dunbar) 307; Tom Dingwall (Nairn Dunbar) 313. Bruce Thomson, of Inverness, retired after rounds of 73 and two 79s.

The other seven players from the north who completed all four rounds were:

Fotheringham, the last north winner of the trophy in 2004, collected the last voucher on offer after his 10th place finish with a total of 292.

A third round four under par 68 lifted Milne into a challenging position going into the final round, but he was unable to maintain his good run of form, slipping back to a seventh place prize voucher of £80 from a final card of 74.

There was a strong north challenge anticipated, but only two players — Jordan Milne (Elgin) and Bryan Fotheringham (Inverness) — finished in the top 10.

Going into the event heading the merit table with 754 points, the Lundin Links Golf Club member compiled a 10 under par total of 278 from two rounds of 70 and two of 69 to win by three from Peter Latimer (St Andrews New).

JAMES White virtually clinched the Scottish Men’s Order of Merit title for the season when he won the North District’s 72 hole Championship for the David Blair Trophy at Nairn Dunbar.
