FORTROSE and Rosemarkie has been selected as one of the venues for the inaugural Highland Scramble, which begins next weekend.

The competition, initiated by the Scottish Golf Union as part of their new sponsorship with Scottish Hydro, provides the unique chance for SGU and Scottish Ladies Golfing Association (SLGA) club members to play alongside a leading Team Scottish Hydro Tour professional in the finals on Wednesday 19th June.

The three-player Texas Scramble format will give golfers at all levels the opportunity to take part, given it is open to men, women, boys and girls.

Four regional qualifiers are to take place across the Highlands this month and June, with the leading team at each event winning a team in the Scottish Hydro Challenge Pro-Am and enjoying the memorable experience of playing with an established Tour professional.

The first qualifiers both take place on Saturday 11th May, one over the stunning James Braid-designed northern links of Brora and the other at picturesque Pitlochry.

A day later, Fortrose and Rosemarkie — another Braid-designed course — hosts the third qualifier, before Elgin in the north east stages the final event on Sunday 2nd June.

Participants will be joined by members of Team Scottish Hydro, who will be hosting a coaching clinic at each club then playing a ‘Beat the Pro’ par three challenge with all competitors on the day.

Qualifying events are open to all members of SGU and SLGA affiliated golf clubs with a current handicap and participants must be registered with the SGU’s centralised database of handicaps.

"Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club are delighted to have been selected as one of the host clubs for the first-ever Highland Scramble in what is our 125th anniversary on the links," said club secretary Mike MacDonald.

"The event should prove to be very popular with both our members and visiting clubs, who may wish to enter a team for the qualifying event.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity for all players on the day and, without doubt, helps to increase our club profile even further as we are already hosting three national events this season."

Ross Duncan, SGU marketing and sponsorship manager, is confident the series of events will prove to be popular with golfers of all ages.

"The Scottish Hydro Highland Scramble events highlights our commitment to offering unique playing opportunities for golf club members at all levels," he said.

"We have four fantastic clubs hosting the qualifying events and it will be a fantastic experience for those winning through to the Pro-Am and playing with a Tour professional."
