FORMER Inverness Caledonian Thistle player David Wotherspoon says being part of a team challenging to win promotion to the Premiership was the reason he signed for Dundee United.

Wotherspoon officially signed for the Championship league leaders yesterday after turning down a deal to remain at Inverness.

Wotherspoon joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle back in October after leaving St Johnstone and became a fans' favourite, scoring four goals in 10 appearances.

He was Duncan Ferguson's first signing and the Canadian international was offered a deal to remain at Inverness after his contract expired this month.

However, he turned it down in favour of joining Dundee United until the end of the season, saying he is looking forward to the challenge of getting his new club back into the Premiership after being relegated last year.

Speaking on Dundee United social media, he said: "It has been a couple of weeks things were going and getting sorted but it is nice to officially start. I'm just delighted to get things sorted.

"I've seen the run they've been on and where they are in the table challenging to go in the Premiership and the size of the club.

"I'm looking forward to getting started and being part of it."

"I love getting my hands on silverware and to add to my cv would be that promotion which is the club's aim of getting into the Premiership where they belong."

Wotherspoon said that he enjoyed his time at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Despite making the step down to Championship level after playing for 14 years in the Premiership with Hibernian and St Johnstone, says he has found it is a good level of football.

"It's been tough and difficult and I really enjoyed my time at Inverness and the standard is high.

"There is not many games where you go in and think it is going to be an easy game.

"Every game is tough but I've enjoyed it so far."

Speaking about his first impression of the Dundee United squad, he said: "I have noticed in the group a lot of youngsters in the squad and look to pass on experience and develop them as players as well as people.

"When I spoke to Jim Goodwin he said I can play across that front three, I will look to get among the boys this week and be part of training and get into the team if I can."
