Former Inverness Caledonian Thistle player Ryan Christie scored the winner for Scotland who came from behind to defeat the Republic of Ireland at Hampden in Nations League Group B1.

John Egan gave Republic of Ireland the lead in the 18th minute after firing in a low shot from eight yards.

Scotland equalised four minutes into the second half when Christie's cross found the head of Jack Hendry who nodded home from six yards.

Scotland were awarded a penalty eight minutes from time when Alan Browne was guilty of handball.

Christie kept his cool to slot the ball home from 12 yards and give them all three points.

It was Christie's fifth goal for Scotland who was making his 33rd appearance for his country.

Scotland are two points ahead of Ukraine who they face in Krakow, Poland on Tuesday and will win the group and promotion if they avoid defeat.

Avoiding defeat will also secure a play-off place for Euro 2024.

Christie, who now plays for English Premiership outfit Bournemouth, came through the Inverness Caledonian Thistle youth academy and played in the first team for two seasons, including the Scottish Cup winning team in 2015, before moving to Celtic.

He spent time on loan at Aberdeen before going on to be a regular first team player for Celtic.

Last season, he moved to Bournemouth in a deal reported to be worth around £1.5 million.

He helped the Cherries win promotion from the English Championship to the English Premiership.
