Former Inverness Caledonian Thistle midfielder Ryan Christie scores as Scotland beat Serbia to reach first major tournament since 1998

Former Inverness Caledonian Thistle midfielder Ryan Christie scored as Scotland qualified for the European Championship after a penalty shoot-out victory over Serbia in Belgrade.

The Celtic player scored in the 51st minute with a low drive from the edge of the 18-yard box to give Scotland the lead.

But Serbia forced the game into extra time when Luka Jovic scored a free header in the 89th minute to make it 1–1.

However Scotland held their nerve to win the penalty shoot-out 5–4 to reach a major tournament for the first time since the 1998 World Cup.

It means Scotland will face Croatia, Czech Republic and England at the European Championship which will take place in June.

Scotland will face Czech Republic at Hampden on June 14.

Four days later they will face England at Wembley on June 18.

Their final group game will be against Croatia at Hampden on June 21.

Christie (25) came through the Caley Thistle youth set up and broke into the first team in 2013 before signing for Celtic in 2015.

It was Christie's 14th cap and fourth goal for his country.
