DUNCAN Ferguson stepped out at the Caledonian Stadium to a tannoy blast of his former club Everton’s adopted Z Cars theme.
It is the X factor in attack that the Goodison Park legend will now try to instil in his squad in coming weeks.
In evidence for supporters braving torrential rain on his home managerial debut was a fresh style of play, with assured shape, solidity and some hard work from forward-thinking players like Billy Mckay and Aaron Doran in closing the opposition down.
All that Caley Thistle lacked was that final spark of inspiration in terms of a killer pass, touch or finish in and around the penalty area.
Ferguson is confident it will come.
“You can see a wee bit of the style that is going to be attached to us,” he said.
“I want to play football. I want to build from the back. I want us to get into the final third and not just panic and throw balls in the box.
“When we’re in the transition and counter-attacking, yes, you go quickly, but once we’re in there we need a rhythm, we need to connect and combine.
“We started to get that in the second half, without quite having that final pass.
“It was hard work from both teams. We were really good defensively. Partick have scored a lot of goals in the last few games and were the top scorers in the league.
“That’s our first clean sheet, so defensively and tactically we were very good.
“Of course, in the balance of creating chances, the final pass was not quite there, but I’m really pleased because the draw gets us another point and keeps the momentum going.
“The boys need to show a bit more confidence in possession and believe in themselves, because when they did it, they got in there.
“It is not about long balls, it is about playing football. Then can we create a chance? But our attacking balance was very good and we restricted Partick to hardly any opportunities.”
