HIGHLAND rounded off a season to remember for the city with their annual dinner at the Craigmonie Hotel.

The main speaker on the evening was Scottish Rugby Union vice president Ian Rankin, supported by journalist Jack Nixon and George Asher, director of Ashers Bakery Ltd.

Guiding the assembled guests through the evening was former player and now coach, Bruce MacGregor, as master of ceremonies, while Highland’s honorary president Colin Baillie MBE rounded off the evening with the vote of thanks.

A thoroughly entertaining night also saw various awards handed out to add to the trophies that were on display — the RBS Caledonia League Division Two title, the RBS North Regional Bowl, the Jack Henderson Trophy and the RBS Bowl.

Rankin was on hand to make the presentations of the club awards with Craig Findlater named player of the year, while Nathan MacLaughlan was crowned the most improved player.

The biggest cheer of the evening, however, went to Geoff Begg, who was awarded with the club personality of the year for his immense work behind the scenes.

There was also a special award made to first-team head coach Davie Carson for not only his work in guiding the senior side through the league campaign with a 100 per cent record, but also putting together such a great coaching team.

It also recognised Carson’s determination to keep coaching through his battle with illness. He could not be there on the night, but fellow coach Morris Dillon accepted the award on his behalf.

The curtain was eventually brought down on the season with a final celebration for the club at Bogbain Farm, hosted by MacGregor, a few days later. The day included a special address by Highland Council leader Drew Hendry.

The players can now enjoy a well earned break, but club officials will be back at Canal Park on Tuesday 17th June for Highland’s annual general meeting.
