Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s women have a rare double header this weekend as they bid to record their first win in 2024.

A lack of free weekends to slip rescheduled matches into mean that the Caley Jags face a long journey south to Ayr United on Friday.

Then, Inverness will return to the Highland capital as they host Westdyke at Millburn Academy on Sunday afternoon.

Ayr are the side who have taken advantage of ICT’s loss of form since the turn of the year, sitting second in the promotion play-off spot in the SWF Championship.

Realistically, if Inverness do not beat them this evening, that will put an end to Caley Thistle’s hopes of launching a late-season charge to pip Ayr to that chance at promotion.

Even if ICT do not get the required result, though, they will be desperate to get three points against Westdyke this weekend.

That is because all four of their league games in 2024 so far have ended in defeat, making the last time they tasted victory November 19 when they swept Morton aside 9-0 in Inverness.

While Caley Thistle are coming to the business end of their season, the Highlands and Islands League has only just kicked off – with a shock result in the opening round of games last Sunday.

Defending double winners Buckie were beaten 1-0 by Sutherland, while 2023 runners-up Orkney were thrashed 6-1 by newcomers Ross County.

Those early results are a sign that it could be all change in the division this summer.

Clachnacuddin, the league’s first ever champions back in 2019, got their campaign off to a winning start with a 4-1 triumph over Nairn St Ninian.

The final result from the opening day of the season saw Caithness beat Ross and Cromarty 7-2 to go top of the table.

This weekend sees the Inverness area clubs take on the early pace-setters, with Clachnacuddin hosting Caithness.

Nairn St Ninian will also be at home against Ross County.

Elsewhere, Ross and Cromarty host Sutherland, while Buckie will look to bounce back to form away at Orkney.
