DAVE Newsham will make a one-off return to the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at Knockhill this weekend.

Westhill racer Newsham will stand in for Kelvin Fletcher on the Power Maxed Racing team, who he drove for in BTCC last season.

Fletcher is missing this weekend’s three races for the birth of his first child and Newsham, who stepped out of the Championship this year and has been racing in British Rallycross for PMR, will be a more than capable substitute.

Financial constraints prevented Newsham from making a sixth campaign in BTCC but could not say no to the offer of a return.

“I’ve loved racing in British Rallycross this season but the BTCC has always held a special place in my heart,” he said. “When Adam (Weaver, team boss) approached me to stand in for Kelvin, I couldn’t get the word yes out fast enough.

“The team and car were great last year and with the upgrades for this year, I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel.

“Kelvin has made great progress in the car this year but family is family and we’ll keep our ears open for baby news this weekend.”

Newsham’s best result in the PMR Chevy Cruze last year was a sixth-placed finish at Donington but Knockhill, based six miles north of Dunfermline, is effectively his home track and he came second there in 2014.
