Ross County manager Malky Mackay is proud to see young striker Matthew Wright preparing for a trip to Hampden Park – and says he will even be asking the academy product for a complimentary ticket.

Wright is out on loan at League One side Falkirk, and started as they defeated Ayr United to seal their place in the Scottish Cup semi finals next month.

It promises to be a big moment for the 20-year-old, who has made nine appearances across all competitions for the Bairns since linking up with them at the end of January.

Mackay, then, was keenly watching to see how his young talent fared against Ayr, and believes Wright’s time at Falkirk is helping him add new elements to his game.

“I was delighted for him, we all were when we found out he was starting,” Mackay enthused.

“Him and Adam (Mackinnon) have progressed in a way that I am really happy with.

“Stewart Petrie’s Montrose was fantastic for them in the first half of the season. Adam has gone back there and Matty has gone to Falkirk.

“That’s a club at the top end of that league, and they had 6500 fans there the other night which is fantastic.

“Matty knows that he’s part of something there rather than being the main man, and there are parts of the game he still has to learn.

“Still, they are happy with his contributions, and for him to start against Ayr was great. He’s going to a semi final at Hampden, which his something very few people get to do, so I love it for him.”

Mackay will reassess their progress in the summer to assess what happens next.

“We’ll see whether the next step is the last one before they come back in here, or whether they come straight back in,” Mackay added.

“That’s down to them, but they are two boys that I’m desperate to see in Ross County jerseys.

“Our fans will want to see that as well, because they can make great contributions to our club.”
