JAMES Anderson says being named Highland League young player of the year has given him the motivation to do even better next season.

The Clachnacuddin striker was named as the division’s top youngster after a sensational campaign in front of goal when he found the net 25 times.

The 20-year-old was unable to go to the awards ceremony as he was on holiday in Spain.

But returning home yesterday, he said that he is striving to do even better next season and wants to do that with Clachnacuddin.

“Winning the award makes me want to kick on and try and win something else next year,” he said.

“I feel like I need to one up it next season.

“Obviously scoring so many goals last season has helped me get the credit.

“But the amount of goals that I managed to score was credit to how the team was playing last season.

“We tried to get the ball down and play football and the way we set up suited me.

“I don’t think we will change that next season, but we will be another year more mature and streetwise.

“Hopefully that will lead us to pushing up the table which I am confident we will.

“We are definitely going to kick on next season and I am looking forward to playing again.”
Anderson follows in the footsteps of Blair Lawrie as the latest Clachnacuddin player to be named Highland League Young Player of the Year.

The award is being kept by his teammate Shaun Sutherland until he arrives back from holiday.

He also received a message from Andrew Macrae from Brora Rangers, the last person to win the award, offering his congratulations.

Anderson says he has committed his future to Clachnacuddin despite interest from other Highland League clubs to secure his services.

The hitman says playing at a club where he feels settled is the most important thing for him.

Speaking about other offers, he said: “There were bits and pieces, but there was never much to think about.

“I am just looking forward to get back to pre-season on June 4 and look to be at it in the first few weeks.”
