Brechin, relegated from the SPFL into the Highland League last season, were one of the favourites to earn a spot in the pyramid play-off this summer.

However, they currently trail long-time leaders Fraserburgh by four points, and record-breaking Buckie Thistle by three, with just three matches left to play.

While not mathematically out of the title race, then, it is realistically unlikely that they will top the table at the end of the campaign.

As long as there is a chance, though, Macdonald believes Brechin will continue to go all out to get results in the hope teams above them slip up.

“They will see that mathematically they can still (win the league),” Macdonald explained.

“I think it will be tough, because the top two just keep winning.

“It’s unbelievable – especially Buckie’s run, it’s incredible, but you’ve got to take your hat off to Fraserburgh too because they just keep winning games as well.

“It’s incredible what the two of them have done, but until Brechin are mathematically out they will look to keep winning, because you never know what can happen.”

Clach have their own battle for positions in the league table, with eighth still well within reach thanks to games in hand.

They currently trail Wick Academy and Nairn County, who each lost last Saturday, but that just made the Lilywhites’ draw against Lossiemouth all the more disappointing.

“That’s what makes last Saturday that wee bit more frustrating,” Macdonald, in his first full season at Grant Street Park, said.

“Lossie worked really hard. They pressed us, but they didn’t create anything.

“Martin Mackinnon, my goalkeeper, has not really had anything to do, but it was a frustrating afternoon for us.

“We get them, you get them in football, there’s no point in dwelling on it, so we’ll move on.”

Macdonald will not have the benefit of a full squad to pick from as Clachnacuddin prepare to make the journey to Brechin.

Martin Callum is unavailable, and Blair Lawrie and Scott Morrison will also be on the sidelines willing the Lilywhites to three points.
