The four-time Major winner has been so impressed by what the course on the shores of the Moray Firth has to offer that he firmly believes it is ideal preparation ahead of event at Royal St George's.

For several years, the world's top golfers have called for the Scottish Open to take place at a links venue in order to get themselves ready for the British Open and Mickelson is delighted these pleas have been heard by the European Tour, who this year decided to switch the tournament to Castle Stuart.

He staunchly supports the move and even went as far to say that he would not be surprised to see players who have chosen to enter the Scottish Open and do well figuring high up the leaderboard at Sandwich.

"I expect that the winner of next week's British Open to be someone who does well at Castle Stuart this week," said the 41-year-old American.

"It's so important as a player to acclimatise if you hope to compete and this is why it's great to come to a links course the week before the British Open.

"I'm really excited to be here. Castle Stuart is an exceptional golf course that will showcase the best players in the world.

"The field for this year's Scottish Open is one of the strongest we've ever had and I think that over the next few years it's only going to get stronger."
