Inverness Caledonian Thistle top scorer Billy Mckay says he should have found more goals this season in the Championship.
The Northern Irish international hit his 15th goal of the campaign in all competitions in the 2–1 win over Kilmarnock on Friday which secured the club's place in the play-offs.
It is an impressive return for the 33-year-old, whose season was disrupted at the beginning of the campaign with injury.
But Mckay believes he could have found the net more often this season and is determined to add to his total in a bid to fire Inverness back to the Premiership.
Asked if he was happy with his goal return this season, he said: "I am and i'm not. I should have scored more to be honest.
"But if you told me I would have scored 15 at the start of the season, most strikers would be happy with that.
"But I am always hard on myself, there are still games to go and the play-offs as well, so hopefully I can score more and help the lads."
Caley Thistle were the frontrunners in the Championship winning seven of their first nine matches and were still at the top near the end of 2021.
But a drastic loss of form saw them go 11 matches without a win and not win their first game in 2022 until March.
Mckay admitted that they look back at what could have been, saying picking up a few victories during the winless run could have kept them in the title race.
"It is good to hit form at the right time, but looking back we are obviously disappointed," admitted Mckay.
"If we turned a couple of those results into wins, we would still be in the title race
"But we are five unbeaten and we have to keep that going into the play-offs."
Mckay, who has played in the Premiership with Inverness and Ross County, is determined for one more crack in the top flight.
He believes Caley Thistle are good enough to go up by winning the play-offs after going five games unbeaten, which includes four victories as they have almost secured at least third place.
"That is where we want to be, we don't want to be in the Championship," he said.
"I played here when we were in the Premiership and had a great time. That is where we want to be again."
With Arbroath hammering Queen of the South 5–1 on Saturday, Inverness are nine points behind second place with three games remaining.
Inverness head to Dumfries on Tuesday to face Queen of the South where the hosts must win to avoid relegation.
Despite requiring to win their final three matches and Arbroath to lose their last two games of the regular season, believes second place is still achievable.
"We will try and go again on Tuesday and get wins, it is out of hands, we will keep going for second place.
"We are on a good run and have three games to go until the end of the season.
"We will keep the momentum going and take every game until it is the last.
"The play-offs are a shootout and we are trying to get up."
