Billy Mckay is confident Caley Thistle’s strikers will thrive off veteran David Wotherspoon’s creativity and service.

The ex-St Johnstone great – with over 500 senior matches, World Cup and Gold Cup action, two Scottish Cups and one League Cup triumph behind him – brings vast experience to Caley Thistle’s squad.

A free agent since the summer, the 33-year-old became Duncan Ferguson’s first signing earlier this week.

For Mckay, one year older than the Canada international, ability rather than age is of greatest interest.

“Over the years, I’ve played against David a lot. He is a quality player, very good on the ball,” Mckay said.

“He is one we were always wary of and he’s come into training and fitted in straight away.

“We can see his qualities – he has played in a World Cup and a Gold Cup final. He is going to be a terrific asset for us and, for an attacking player like me, it is great to bring in an intelligent player who can score goals and create chances. That’s only going to benefit all the strikers.”

Mckay is really enjoying life under Everton legend Duncan Ferguson.

“It has been hard work, but we’ve seen right away that we’ll get results if we do the right things,” Mckay said.

“There’s been a little tweak in the style of play. He wants the strikers to sit off and help the midfield more, rather than constantly chase defenders. If we sit in a good shape, the opposition can’t play through the middle.

“We’re now on a longer week which the boys have adapted to well. The intensity levels and the distances we’re covering in training have definitely gone up.

“We have always believed that we will get ourselves out of the situation we’re in, whoever the manager is, but it has been a pretty good start.”

Caley Thistle face Morton away and have a good record at Cappielow, barring a hefty 4-0 drubbing last season.

“You have to give everyone in the league the respect they deserve. We were on a very good run last season then suddenly lost back-to-back games to Hamilton, who were struggling.

“We’ve just got to make sure we’re at it, against a team who will be fighting for every point at the minute.”
