Caley Thistle 0

Dundee United 1 (Watt)

Inverness Caledonian Thistle lost out to Dundee United in a game that will not live long in the memory.

Goalmouth action was few and far between throughout the 90 minutes, and it became apparent that a single goal would likely prove decisive.

Unfortunately for the Caley Jags, it went the way of United, with Tony Watt scoring a tap in minutes before the full-time whistle.

Both sides seemed to cancel each other out early on, with barely a sight of goal registered through the first 20 minutes.

Caley Thistle were the ones who really looked to be growing into the game though, and came within inches of breaking the deadlock midway through the half.

Cameron Harper's corner kick was met by Danny Devine, whose header beat goalkeeper Jack Walton only to be cleared off the line by Jordan Tillson.

Only a couple of deflected attempts provided any other sort of threat before the interval, with Billy Mckay and Luis Longstaff each seeing efforts directed into the hands of Walton.

It was the visitors who had the first chance after the restart, with Tony Watt heading over from Liam Grimshaw's cross.

Inverness fired back though, with Max Anderson forcing Walton to scramble across to his right after connecting with David Carson's cross.

The visitors responded in kind, with Archie Meekison coming off the bench to fire a powerful effort at goal – but too close to Mark Ridgers.

That may have been a warning shot, as just a few minutes before the end Dundee United would take the lead.

Glenn Middleton got into space on the left flank and sent a low ball across the face of goal, where Tony Watt was waiting to tap in from close range.

Cillian Sheridan, thrown on as a substitute to try and salvage something for Inverness, headed wide of the mark shortly afterwards.

There was also a late shout for a penalty for ICT, when Grimshaw appeared to handball inside his own box, but nothing was given – leaving Caley Thistle with nothing to show for their efforts.
