On-loan Inverness Caledonian Thistle star Daniel MacKay says he has remained in regular contact with parent club Hibernian since returning to the Highland capital.

MacKay caught the eye with a blistering run of form for the Caley Jags towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign, prompting the Hibees to secure his signature.

Since then, though, injuries and multiple changes of managers have meant limited opportunities for the 21-year-old at Easter Road, so he came back to boyhood club ICT on a season-long loan in the summer.

Naturally, Hibs have been keeping an eye on his progress, but while MacKay has been kept in the loop with the thinking in Edinburgh, his main focus and priority is Inverness.

“They have a loans manager there, Eddie May, and I speak to him quite a lot,” MacKay explained.

“He keeps me in the loop with what’s being said, and he goes to the games sometimes and then he’ll give me a phone call to make some suggestions.

“They have a loans meeting every month to discuss what players have done, so Eddie will feed that back to me.

“It’s been good, but I know myself when I’ve not had a good game. I’m my own harshest critic. I’ve got a good relationship with the gaffer too, so we can have conversations to see where I can kick on.

“They’ve helped me out a lot – even when I was having a bit of a tough time at the start of this year.

“It’s obviously different, because we play a different system to Hibs. The gaffer here wants me out wide, and then when the ball is on the other side he wants me in at the back post where I can affect it.

“I haven’t had any specific instructions from Hibs to say ‘do this more’ or ‘do that’, because at the end of the day the gaffer here can’t have me doing completely different things from everyone else.”
