Caley Thistle have a strong recent record in the competition, lifting the trophy in 2018 and then being named joint-winners alongside Raith Rovers for the 2019/20 season, which was cut short by the pandemic.

Last season ICT got past Buckie Thistle and Elgin City before being drawn against Raith in the quarter finals.

The Kirkcaldy side won that tie 5–4 on penalties, and went on to win the competition.

This season sees the return of teams from other parts of the UK, with Northern Ireland's Linfield and Cliftonville, and The New Saints and Caernarfon Town from Wales all being invited to take part and entering in the third round along with Championship and League One sides.

Third round ties will take place on the weekend of Saturday, September 24.
