His views come after Caley Thistle defeated Kilmarnock 2–1 on Friday night to seal their place in the play-offs and are in a good position to secure third.

Partick Thistle and Raith Rovers are fighting for the final play-off place with both teams having two games remaining.

While Caley Thistle could still finish the season in fourth place themselves, Wilson believes only second and third place in the Championship should qualify for the play-offs, meaning the third place team would play the same amount of games as everyone else, instead of having to play two extra to reach the play-offs.

“This is my personal view and not the club’s, but I think it should be second against third and the winner plays the second bottom team in the Premiership,” said Wilson.

“We could still end up being fourth and my words could be rammed down my throat.

“But I have not been a big advocate of fourth place in a 10-team league getting a play-off because you’re nearly rewarding, not quite mediocrity, but fourth out of 10th is nearly mid-table. “My personal view is six games is too many to play at the end of a hard gruelling season.

“I think it should be cut to four, whatever way they do that I don’t care, but six games is too many.“

Arbroath have almost sealed second place as they are nine points ahead of Inverness who have three games to go, starting at Queen of the South tonight.

Wilson says while Inverness have to win their last three games and Arbroath must lose their last two, it is not beyond the realms of possibility.

“Arithmetically, we can still finish second, but that is out of our hands.

“All we can do is try and win on Tuesday night and watch Kilmarnock v Arbroath on Friday.

“If results go our way, we will of course aim to win our last two after that.

“All we can worry about is Tuesday night, whatever else happens, happens.”

Queen of the South must beat Inverness tonight or they will be relegated from the Championship.
