Caley Thistle will face Arbroath in an all-Championship showdown in the third round of the SPFL Trust Trophy.

This afternoon's draw pitted Billy Dodds' men away to Dick Campbell's side in the last 32 of the competition.

Arbroath, like Inverness, have endured a tough start to the new season with just one win in six outings.

The tie will take place on the weekend of September 9 and 10.

Caley Jags avoided the four cross-border clubs – Coleraine and Cliftonville from Northern Ireland and Bala Town and New Saints from Wales.

The Inverness club have won the Challenge Cup competition in its various guises three times – in seasons 2003/04, 2017/18 and 2019/20 – with the latter final a joint award with Raith after postponement due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The competition is often used a as means to give clubs' fringe and younger players a run-out.

Notable ties see holders Hamilton Accies head across the Irish Sea to face Coleraine, while Queen's Park visit Bala Town.

Perhaps the tie of the round pits Championship favourites Dundee United at home to in-form Dunfermline.
