Nairn County chairman Donald Matheson believes that a new bench at Station Park is a fitting tribute to Bobby Mcpherson.

Lifelong County fan Mcpherson was a familiar face at the ground for decades, but sadly passed away earlier this year.

His family wanted to do something to commemorate his support for the club, and Matheson was glad to oblige.

Bobby’s bench was installed on Friday night, and Matheson says it was a poignant moment.

“It was very emotional I must admit, we’ve put it up where Bobby used to stand with the boys on the hill,” he explained.

“It’s something to do for Bobby, he was a highly respected supporter at the club for decades and he was Nairn County through and through.

“I knew him for quite a few years myself, but he was always there with his mates, every Saturday.

“It’s a fitting tribute to a man that will be there for a very long time, and a lot of people knew him.

“It’s very nice in that respect that we could accommodate something like that for somebody that was so Nairn County through and through.”

When the Highland League resumes, one family or one person can use the bench due to social distancing rules.

Mcpherson’s son-in-law will be making sure it is well tended to as a painter and decorator, but there is an irony that Mcpherson himself would not have used it.

“He never sat down,” Matheson recalled.

“His son Gary was there on Friday, and somebody told him to sit on the bench and get a photo, and he said ‘you don’t sit at a football ground’ which I thought was nice!

“The boys on the hill did take in one match a couple of seasons ago with seats reserved in the stand. They sat there for about 10 minutes, and said that’s it, and went back out and sat on the hill.

“Come rain, hail or sunshine, they were always standing in the same place.”
