Former Inverness Caledonian Thistle vice chairman Bennett backs calls for a 14-team Scottish Premiership





Graeme Bennett is urging Scotland’s football authorities to act swiftly to end Caley Thistle’s worrying state of limbo between a Premiership future and potentially severe cuts.

The past ICT vice chairman, director and player believes the SPFL’s continued inability to offer clarity to clubs amid the coronavirus crisis is only adding to financial insecurity.

Bennett is full of admiration for the way the new Caley Thistle board, led by chairman Ross Morrison and chief executive Scot Gardiner, has worked to steady the ship by raising close to £700,000 since last October.

But the season’s enforced shutdown is presenting almost every club in the country with huge challenges through lost income.

One of the potential routes under discussion within Hampden corridors, favoured by Bennett, is to finish the season on current standings and scrap relegation ahead of next season.

That would create a top flight of 14, rather than 12 teams, with Championship leaders Dundee United and second-top Caley Thistle promoted.
