Beauly Shinty Club are set to feed over 90 kids a hot meal every week for the next eight weeks to help local families through the cost of living crisis.

The club, who have already been named MOWI's 2022 Community Club of the Year, have accessed cost of living funding through a Highland Council scheme that will allow them to put hot food in 720 youngsters' bellies over the harsh winter months.

Alfie MacLeod (Glenurquhart Shinty Club) & Daniel Renwick (Beauly Shinty Club) are the first of 90 kids to be fed by Beauly Shinty Club this week as part of an eight-week initiative.
Alfie MacLeod (Glenurquhart Shinty Club) & Daniel Renwick (Beauly Shinty Club) are the first of 90 kids to be fed by Beauly Shinty Club this week as part of an eight-week initiative.

The first meals were provided after the club’s under-14s fixture against Glenurquhart Shinty Club on Tuesday evening, with players from both sides benefitting.

Local company Red Poppy provided the food to the club.

Under-14s coach and club secretary, Aarron Duncan-MacLeod said: “It was a great feeling to be able to come here to Drumnadrochit and provide a hot meal for both our guys and the Glen, and I think it was well received all round.

“This winter is going to be really difficult and anything that we are able to do to make it easier for people in Beauly, and beyond, is really special.

"All that was missing is the result!”

All players who train with the club – ranging from Primary One pupils through to under-14s – will receive food after their session as well as any clubs who visit Braeview for a youth match over the next eight weeks.

Speaking of the development, Beauly Shinty Club president, Iain Petrie said: “We are delighted to have successfully obtained funding from the Highland Council for this project.

“As a club, we are all too aware of the impact that the cost of living crisis is going to have in the heart of our Highland community and anything we can do to help remedy that, we will.

“In the grand scheme of things, this is a small impact but we hope that for the kids and families receiving the meals it is one well worth pursuing.”
