Beauly Shinty Club are one of 10 across the country to have been successful in their application to the Mowi Youth Development Fund.

The fund is aimed at fostering the growth of shinty at a grassroots level, and the successful recipients were confirmed by sponsors Mowi and the Camanachd Association earlier this week.

Each of the 10 clubs chosen will receive £500 to further their youth development initiatives, propelling the future of the sport.

As well as Beauly, the successful clubs were Aberdour, Ballachulish, Kilmallie, Kilmory-Dunadd, Kincraig, Kyles Athletic, Skye, Strathspey and Stirling.

All of the winners were chosen after showcasing dedication and creativity when it comes to nurturing the next generation of shinty players.

Beauly have already begun to see the impact of their youth pathway.

Last year, they won the Under-17 MacTavish Cup, and several of those players have been in and around the first team squad – which stepped up to the Premiership for the first time in 2023.

They also saw six players selected for this summer’s Tour of Ireland, an annual under-17s tour comprising of the best young players Scotland has to offer heading over for shinty/hurling challenge matches.

Beauly’s Finlay MacLennan was also picked as captain this year, following clubmate Euan MacCormick getting the armband in 2022.

Now they will hope that the additional funding will contribute towards maintaining that platform for young shinty players to reach their potential at the club.

Jayne MacKay, MOWI’s community engagement officer, shared her thoughts on the initiative, stating: “We are immensely proud to contribute to the development of shinty’s future stars.

“We look forward to witnessing the positive impact this initiative will have on the future of shinty, especially in remote communities where both shinty and Mowi contribute to community wellbeing.”

The Camanachd Association also congratulated all the successful clubs, remaining committed to empowering youth development initiatives.
